Notes on the Calendar of The Kingdom of the Lands and Creatures United by Uther

In the kingdom, as it is known by most of its inhabitants, or Uther’s Kingdom as most inhabitants know it of nearby realms, years are given in Kingdom Years (KY). This system of dates started when Uther crowned his son Arthur as the first king on Midwinter day and declared that as the beginning of the first day of the first year of the kingdom.

The weeks and months used in the kingdom follow, more or less, the rest of the continent, but have unique names in the kingdom’s language. These are simple names: Firstday, Secondday, Thirdday, etc., up through Seventhday; and Firstmonth, Secondmonth, Thirdmonth, etc., up through Twelthmonth.

Midwinter day, the first day of the year, falls between Twelthmonth and Firstmonth, and does not fall on any weekday. This change started in 237 as part of a calendar reform that was adopted from other countries on the continent after discovering the previous calendar was drifting, causing the solstices and equinoxes to not occur on the correct date. Since several dates for both sacred and secular events are tied to these solar days, this was a problem. As part of the adjustment, Midwinter and the Midsummer leap day were moved out of the regular months to make a more regular pattern of alternating month lengths.

The twelve months alternate between 31 and 30 days, with Firstmonth being 31 days long. The year is 367 or 368 days long.

Midsummer leap days occur every 4 years, except in century years. The extra day happens between Sixthmonth and Seventhmonth.

The moon makes a 31-day cycle, drifting around the calendar unrelated to the solar months. Each year, the church will track and publish the dates of any celebrations that are tied to lunar events rather than solar events or calendar dates.
